Football had experienced controversies before, but the rise of mass-momentum plays led to the sport’s first crisis. The sport always had a reputation for violence. Now, however, the public began to see violence as more than just the random by-product of a physical game. It was an integral part of football. Many disapproved. The president of Northwestern, Henry Rogers, began to suggest the game’s prohibition to his colleagues at other schools.44 President Grover Cleveland actually took the step, after reading a report on the Naval Academy’s football team. Injuries had taken a severe toll on midshipmen: Twenty-four had been admitted to the hospital and they had suffered eighty-two sick days.45 He put an end to the annual Army-Navy football game. It did not resume until 1899.
